2008 Rock N Roll Predictions... |
As 2007 comes to a close, let us reflect on some of the musical headlines and artists that topped this year’s news and look into 2008. They say what comes around goes around and this old cliché' certainly held true for 2007. As some of the bands that topped the charts in the 80's reunited and embarked on major concert tours including The Police and Van Halen.

January 2008
One of the most exciting comebacks of the year, was the reunion of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice former Black Sabbath members reunited as Heaven and Hell. For the first time in fifteen years, the band reunited and tour extensively throughout 2007, captivating audiences around the world.
I had the opportunity to discuss with Vinny Appice, his thoughts on the tour and possible Heaven and Hell album in 2008.
Vinny Appice of Heaven and Hell -
The response of the return of Heaven and Hell has been overwhelming. Are there any plans to record a new album in 2008? The demand is certainly there?
Yes, new album coming in 08.
Vinny, what has your most memorable moment been in 2007?
It's just been a very special and memorable year altogether. I will remember it as the year we returned together better than ever and had a great time playing together and seeing all the greatest fans in the world again |

Nikki Sixx - During the 80's, no band lived life as large as Motley Crue. No matter whatever they did, it always seemed to top the headlines. The same holds true today for Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. One of the most anticipated books to hit the market was released on September 18th - New York Times Best Seller "Heroin Diaries" has received a huge response from fans across the world. Nikki Sixx gives us an in-depth look at addiction. He takes us on an incredible journey that holds you spellbound captivating and riveting the true tales that take your breathe away, as a vast array of characters play out every role in this gripping novel centering around addiction.
NIKKI SIXX also unveiled SIXX A.M. featuring NIKKI SIXX, James Michael, and DJ Ashba, all three producers and songwriters on the epic "Heroin Diaries" Soundtrack.
As Nikki Sixx states in "Heroin Diaries", "I am going to do exactly what I want to and fuck everybody else". There is no doubt about it. Nikki Sixx lived life his way, out of control, trying desperately to stay alive.
One of the most interesting aspects of the book is Nikki Sixx has a huge cast of characters including Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, his drug dealer Jason, his family, and ex- lovers including Vanity giving special commentary about their friend Nikki Sixx. Their stories about Nikki make this book ever so extremely honest and real. It s soheartbreaking how his band mates, |

family and friends try to help him with his addiction, but in the end only Nikki Sixx can save himself from the demons that torment him everyday in his life.
As the Motley Crue bass man takes you on the most chaotic ride of a lifetime, Nikki Sixx experiences high, and lows, loses everything, and almost loses the most important thing his life.
It seems that everyone once in his or her lifetime wants to be a rock star. "Heroin Diaries" does not glamorize the lifestyle of a rock star in the least bit. In fact, be careful what you wish for, because life on the other side of the road is not always what you think it will turn out to be.

Rockloahoma - For many years Europe has been the hot spot for Metal Festivals across the world. This year for the first time some of the top 80's bands to emerge out of the genre united for a four day U.S. Festival called,"Rocklahoma". Some of the bands included Poison, RATT, Dokken, and Quiet Riot

Don Dokken will be embarking on a solo tour, opening for Queensryche beginning January 25th. I recently had the opportunity to discuss, "Lightning Strikes Again" with Dokken guitarist Jon Levin. Jon comments,” I have been sitting with it, because I finished all of it quite some time ago. I actually have a guitar solo on this album too. I am pretty pleased with it. I really think it captured how I play at this point in time. So I am very happy with that. I wasn't all that happy with the "Hell To Pay” album. I have had plenty of time to sit with my solos and think about what I want to change and what I like and don't like. It sounds like completely early Dokken. The whole album really is. It is all really good. Everyone who likes the original Dokken album is going to love it. There is nothing not to like about this album."

Kevin Dubrow - Just as 2007 was filled with many highs, there were also many lows. On November 25th, the 80's genre lost one of their own, rock legend Kevin Dubrow. Saviours of Rock correspondent recently spoke to members of Quiet Riot and offer their deepest sympathy and truly appreciate their support to the magazine. .

Nick Catanese - Also, be on the lookout for Black Label Society guitarist Nick Catanese new side project called Speed X featuring Nick on guitar, Queensryche bassist Mike Stone on bass and vocals, and drummer Mike Froedge from Double Drive. Speed X has posted a new music clip on their myspace page called "Speed". Check it out here. www.myspace.com/speedxban
I recently had the opportunity to interview Nick regarding his new side project Speed X.
In the past, you have worked with so many talented people in the business. Let's discuss your current project. In the band, you are working with Queensryche's Mike Stone, and Doubledrive drummer Mike Froedge. How did this come together?
Stoney and me met at the Blacktooth Bash at NAMM, we hit it off there. Then I found out he is a Bass player and sings his ass off. And Mikey, he and I actually played together in bands back in my High Voltage days in Florida. Then he played in Doubledrive and I knew he kicked ass. So we got a great power trio.
What was it like jamming with Mike at the Dimebag Blacktooth bash at NAMM? Did you know right then and there, that you wanted to work with him further, and possibly start a new band from that moment on from your initial meeting?
Totally, when we did, ”I Don't Know" by Ozzy, and Stoney and I doubled the solo, that was it, I was thinking " man we just rehearsed for 2 hours and we are doing this, anything is possible, then he told me he was a bass player so bam that was it.
What kind of sound are you aiming for with the new project?
There isn't a style; we are just writing what comes

out. We have no direction. We are just doing what comes out. We did 3 songs in Atlanta in Mike’s studio, and for just a week, the 3 songs are cool as hell. All different styles and fresh. Doesn’t sound like anything I have heard. There s one song that is very Pink Floydish meets the Beatles. I love it, and the solo is way Stevie Ray.

Chuck Wright of Quiet Riot - Dizzy/Jizzy Tour 2008 www.myspace.com/chuckwrightbass
What are your Top favorite 3 albums of 2007?
"Rehab" Quiet Riot (I think it's the best record they've recorded since QR3)
"Live In The UK" House Of Lords
(Some amazing performances musically on this one)
"This Time Around: An Anthology 1970-2007" Glen Hughes
(probably the best singer/ bassist ever)
What was your favorite show of 2007? I know you played a lot of amazing shows with Quiet Riot this year.
It would have to be the show we did at Sweden Rock .Ahh...the look on Kevin's face with that crowd eating it up in the background was priceless. The band had never played that country until that day and we kicked ass!
Do you have any Rock and Roll Predictions for 2008? Any projects that you would like to share with us?
The record industry will finally figure out and develop technology so CD's can't be copied and people will actually now have to pay for the music they've been stealing so we can all get back to the "way it was". Ok so that's not really a prediction, it's a hope.
Chuck, do you have any upcoming projects?
Projects? Since the unfortunate recent turn of events with my band, I decided |

Chuck Wright |
to grow my graphic arts business and set up a web site dedicated to that. I've always just had a word of mouth clientele. I've recently been asked to play bass for an upcoming Dizzy and Jizzy Tour starting late February next year. It'll be Love/Hate and Dizzy Reed's band "Hookers And Blow". I've also been thinking about putting together a "Faves and Raves" CD with a lot of my personal favorite tracks I've played on over the 80 or so records I have out there. I would pick songs that really didn't get a fair chance or were buried that I love and think need a listen to. It won't just be Hard Rock tracks either; I have a pretty eclectic catalog |
