Therapy? - Interview

Michael McKeegan

One Cure

THERAPY? HAVE BEEN MAKING A NAME FOR THEMSELVES, IN AND OUT OF THE U.K. FOR SO LONG, THAT THEIR 12th ALBUM IS ALREADY UNDERHAND. WE CAUGHT UP WITH FOUNDING MEMBER MICHAEL, TO SEE WHAT HAS CHANGED AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.

August 2007

HEY MICHAEL – HOW ARE YOU AND WHATS IN THE WORKS FOR YOU AT THE
MOMENT?

All is fine, I’m in very good form and the band is just starting to write new material for our 12th full length album.

YOU GUYS JUST GOT BACK FROM THE Hrachovka FESTIVAL, IN Czech Republic. HOW DID THAT GO?
It was great, nice people, great crowd and good atmosphere…the 3 main ingredients for a cool festival.

YOU’RE ALSO DOING THE ‘BE2GETHER FESTIVAL’ SOON TOO, RIGHT?
It’ll be our first time there so that’s always exciting. No idea what to expect but we’ll be doing our best to make it a great show.

WHAT KIND OF SET LIST ARE YOU GUYS PLAYING THESE DAYS?
It really depends on the situation. We’ve done a few festivals over the summer so that’s always hard because you have to squeeze 17 years worth of songs into 40 minutes…;) Normally we try and play a good mix of ‘favourites’ plus the newer songs that seem to work well with the flow of the set.

YOU RELEASED ONE CURE FITS ALL LAST YEAR; IT SEEMED TO GO DOWN WELL?
It did, so it’s always nice when people other than the 3 of us appreciate what we do.

WE THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT. PROBABLY YOUR STRONGEST ALBUM OVERALL; IN OUR OPINION ANYWAY?
Thanks for the compliment; we always aspire to make the ‘next’ album the strongest one; so look out for the new stuff!

Dopamine, Seratonin, Adrenaline & Unconsoled & Rain Hits Concrete WERE PARTICULARY GREAT?
Again, thanks very much…we never played “Unconsoled” live but the other two have had a very good response from the crowd.

THERE DEFINETLY SEEMED TO BE A GREAT MELODIC STRENGTH TO THIS ALBUM?
We tried to make the songs heavy and rhythmic without sacrificing the melody in the songs. Andy worked hard to make sure the vocals sounded good and tried to do some different things with his voice and the vocal delivery.

MUSIC THROUGH A CHEAP TRANSISTOR ALSO CAME OUT THIS YEAR. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THAT?
That was a collection of all our Radio 1 sessions we recorded from 1991-1998…it’s a bit of a UK institution where you spend 8-10 hours recording some exclusive versions of songs for a radio show. Ours is pretty cool as we have different versions (arrangements/lyrics), some covers and some unreleased stuff in there. Originally it was a ‘download only’ thing but we just heard word that a hard copy is coming out August 13th…I think that’s a great thing as there also is a cool booklet with some funny anecdotes and old pictures from our archives.

YOU HAVE BEEN BUSY, BECAUSE YOU ALSO HAVE THE WEBGIG THING. TELL US ABOUT THAT AS WELL?
That was an idea we had to do something ‘interactive’ with our fans. Originally we wanted to do it live with fans phoning or emailing requests in but when we looked into the logistics of it we decided to do something a little more straightforward. Basically we posted a list of 100 or so songs and people voted to choose the setlist. Then we played the top 12 tunes, made good audio and video recordings and made them available for download…it seemed to be a big success and we even had special signed sleeves which were hand numbered and mailed to everyone who ordered.

We just finished that on August 10th but look out for future ones….we have a whole list of ideas and concepts for one off web gigs!

YOU GUYS HAD TROUBLE WITH DRUMMERS THERE FOR A WHILE, BUT NEIL SEEMS TO HAVE SETTLED IN NOW?
Yeah, he’s quite brilliant. People always bang on about how great Fyfe was but I think anyone who’s ever been in a band knows that great playing is only one part of the whole thing. Neil, as well as being shithot on the drums; has a really good ear for arrangement and music plus he’s very pro-active as regards all the other stuff that makes a band great.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT ALBUM, AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT.
We’re just starting to write it now so it’s too early to tell. As always the plan is to make the next album better than all the previous ones. Not easy when you have 11 full length discs but we’re sure going to try! It might take us a bit of time but we don’t want to release anything until we’re sure the album is as good as it possibly can be.

SO WHAT ABOUT YOUR LIFE,
DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN FAMILY?
Yeah, we all have wives and girlfriends and families and pets and all that good stuff.

DO YOU FIND IT HARD TO JUGGLE IT ALL?
It can be tricky but thankfully our partners are very cool and understanding. It’s just a matter of being honest and making sure we always have enough time to balance the work and family commitments.

SO WHATS NEXT FOR THERAPY?
As I said the BBC Sessions are out soon(now!) and record number 12 should be out sometime 2008…other than that I’m sure we’ll be up to some kind’ve mischief somewhere.

AND FINALLY, ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD...
Cheers for the interview and many thanks to all our loyal fans all over the world…hopefully see you all soon!
