Vixen - Interview

Jan Kuehnemund

Year Of The Fox

THE BIGGEST-ROCKING GIRL BAND OF THEM ALL HAS FINALLY RELEASED A BRAND NEW ALBUM, WITH A BRAND NEW SINGER. WE CAUGHT UP WITH FOUNDING MEMBER JAN; TO TALK ABOUT THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF THE VIXENS.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

August 2007

HOW ARE YOU AND WHATS IN THE WORKS FOR YOU AT THE
MOMENT?

We’re great! We’re looking forward to the release of our Live in Sweden album in Europe and the rest of the world, as well as a DVD of the Sweden rock performance in the coming months.  We’re also gearing up for some U.S. and European touring this fall, and we’ve been writing songs for the next studio album as well.  I guess we’re pretty busy!

THIS BAND HAS BEEN UP AND DOWN IN THE PAST, HOW HAVE THINGS BEEN PANNING OUT FOR THIS LINE-UP?
Very well.  It’s a slow process since it’s almost like starting over again, after so many years since the original line-up broke up.  But we’ve been playing and writing together since 2001 and we’re finally beginning to see the fruits of our labor.   The response to the new material & live show has been great!.

LIVE & LEARN SEEMED TO GO DOWN WELL?
Yes, we’ve had a great response to this record.  People seemed to really “get it” and have been very supportive.  It came across better than we expected; that this is the natural progression of the true vixen sound.

THE MOST OBVIOUS CHANGE IS JENNA SANZ-AGERO’S VOCALS?
True.  Almost all of the reviews we’ve seen have been very complimentary of Jenna’s vocals.  She has a different style than Janet and she’s a powerful singer.  We've heard a lot of positive feedback about how well the “classic” vixen songs meld with the new tracks.  Jenna does them justice, that’s for sure.

SHE DEFINITELY HAS A VOCAL RESEMBALANCE TO STEVIE NICKS?
Yes we’ve heard that a lot.  People have compared her voice to a number of other vocalists, but the consistent theme is that they’re top notch singers. And so is Jenna.

I’M A BIG NICKS FAN, SO MY IMMEDIATE RESPONSE WAS…SHE’S GREAT!?
Well thanks!  I’m sure she’ll be thrilled to hear it.  She’s got a certain warmth to her voice on the recordings, but she’s a powerhouse – you really have to come to a live show to get the full impact.  I think you’ll hear even more of her personal style coming through on the next albums.

I THINK IT ADDS SOME DEPTH TO YOUR SOUND?
You’re very kind.  Of course we agree, but it’s nice to be acknowledged in that way.  We still think the best is yet to come.

YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN UNDERRATED GUITARIST?
Wow – thank you!! (I’m blushing here!) That's very kind of you, once again!

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS HAPPENED TO THE GREAT GUITARIST CHICKS OF THE 80’S, LIKE LITA FORD?
I honestly don't know.  I recently had someone contact me, trying to find Lita, but I do not know where she is!!

YES! WE'VE TRIED CONTACTING HER OURSELVES. SHE'S M.I.A!

JUST TO GET SOME PEOPLE UP TO SPEED - THE BAND HAVE HAD A FEW FAMOUS BREAKUPS. WHAT HAPPENED ORIGINALLY, BACK IN ’91?
SHARE OF COURSE TOOK PART IN THE SUPERGROUP; CONTRABAND, WHICH SEEMED TO HAVE SPLIT SEVERAL BANDS?
We were actually getting ready to start writing for our 3rd record, and the band was kind of split down the middle re: style, and also where the songs were going to come from.  Roxy & I were “open” to co-writing with outside songwriters, while Janet & Share were not, so it created a lot of tension.    Also, we had just been dropped by our label, EMI, so things were very unsettled.  Unfortunately we just couldn't keep it all together.

THEN OUT OF NOWHERE, THOSE GUYS GOT THEIR OWN LINE-UP TOGETHER AND TOURED IN ‘97?
Yes, Roxy & Janet did a short tour without Share & me (using other players).

SO YOU OWNED THE NAME, AND THEY STOPPED. BUT THEN YOU GUYS ALL TURNED UP TOGETHER AGAIN IN 2001?
Yes.  After resolving the legal issues the one thing I always wanted to do was play music! So we attempted a reunion tour with the voices of metal; Vince Neil, Ratt and Slaughter.

THAT DIDN’T LAST LONG EITHER?
No, it became clear pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to work.  About half way through that tour I was faced with two choices – give up and go home, or replace the other girls and finish what I started.  There had been many other people in the band before Janet, Roxy and Share, and now after, as well.  Obviously you know which I chose.

SO NOW WE’RE AT THE CURRENT LINE-UP. YOU GOT THESE GUYS TOGETHER PRETTY QUICKLY, RIGHT?

Yes, I had about two weeks between shows. We made some calls from the road and lined up some auditions. Lynn and Kat were recommended by other musicians and friends, and Jenna was referred to us by a drummer that she and I had both played with in different bands. It still seems like a miracle that it came together so quickly and even more so that we have become such good friends.  We love playing together and we always have a great time and we laugh a lot on the road, or whenever we're all together.

YOU GUYS DID DO A FULL REUINION SHOW FOR VH1 THOUGH - JUST A ONE-OFF?.
Yes, everyone knew going in, that this was a “one-time-event”

VH1 Reuinion show

VIXEN ALSO RELEASED AN EXTENDED VERSIONS CD LAST YEAR TOO
Yes, Sony BMG approached our manager right before the Sweden rock festival in 2005, so the timing was great.  They released that album in the U.S. and now Sanctuary is releasing the tracks in the rest of the world, but we’ve added a few songs from the Sweden rock show that you won’t find on the U.S. release.

THE GUITAR ON THAT VERSION OF HOW MUCH LOVE WAS GREAT?
Well, thank you very much!! You're making my day!

SO WHAT ABOUT AOTHER ALBUM, HOPEFULLY IT WON’T TAKE ANOTHER 15 YEARS!? ?
No way! We’ve been writing and we’re already looking at going

Classic Vixens

back into the studio next year.  We really want to maintain this momentum, and after so many years we have a lot of creativity to express.

WELL, IT IS THE YEAR OF THE FOX, RIGHT!!?
Exactly.  And next year, and the year after that we hope!

WELL IT’S BEEN GREAT TALKING, GOOD LUCK WITH THE FUTURE AND HOPEFULLY WE’LL TALK AGAIN SOON?
Thanks.  We’d love that.  We appreciate the support!!
