OVERVIEW
Well it's been 20 years since the Poison boys unleashed Look What The Cat Dragged In. It's hard to believe that it was so long ago. Maybe when you hear some of their earlier songs like I Wont Forget You, it does seem 20 years ago. But all in all Poison manage to dish out an impressive array of tracks. Arranged in chronological order, its all-casual fans will ever need.
SONGS
Nostalgia kicks in straight from the get go with Talk Dirty To Me. The low budget production sounds dated today, but it still has that feel good vibe that makes you want to cruise the streets on a summer night. I Want Action follows in more great form before finishing the earliest years with the less impressive Wont Forget You, Cry Tough and the heavy concert opener Cat Dragged In. You can immediately see the changes the band made and money they received as Nothing But A Good Time blasts into major label rock/pop territory. Fallen Angel is one of the most underrated from the era and still sounds good today. The centrepiece is Bret Michaels crowning achievement and the bands biggest hit Every Rose Has Its Thorn. Possibly the best power ballad of the 80's and a benchmark for all that followed. Next are 2 boring cover songs, (although Mama Don't Dance can get your foot taping) and another huge hit Unskinny Bop. Its high polished production and cheesiness actually seem out of place with their Flesh & Blood stuff. But it's quickly picked up with the superb Ride The Wind and tear-laden ballad Something To Believe In. Stand is a great up lifting number from the Native Tongue album and Last Song is taken from Power To The People, even throwing one in from the horrible Hollyweird. The album concludes with a cover of We're An American Band, which sums it all up.
CONCLUSION
If you already own the Greatest Hits, there's absolutely no reason in getting this. And if you don't own either you could probably get Greatest Hits for cheap which included better songs like So Tell Me Why and Lay You Body Down. But this is a great listen. Poison rarely get any respect, but when you see how many great songs they can string together (and these are only the singles!) you cant deny they had something. Bret Michaels has a way of wearing his heart on his sleave and doing exactly what he believes in, even if he looks the fool. When your having a bad day, nothing can get you up like 18 tracks of Poisons best. This IS Nothin' But A Good Time.
