OVERVIEW
4th album down and Chevelle seem to be sticking to their guns. I receive thousands of albums to review, many come from Europe and seem to share a lot in common with Chevelle, Many actually seem to do it a lot better, so why do they seem to dominate this sound and style, they definitely weren’t the first. I delved into their new C.D to find out.
SONGS
The first thing that punches in, is the thick rhythm guitar, its so chunky and full, I could be fooled into loving it. The first song Antisaint is pretty good. It is very reminiscent of a more pop friendly Tool, and shows Chevelle have a lot to offer. 2nd song Brainiac sounds like it could be a winner, and though it shows a few sparks of quality it quickly becomes boring and stale. They slow things down with Safewaters and for some reason it starts to sound like an English band, and while its not bad, its not great either. Lead off single Well Enough Alone is typical enough, but again, just fails to lift things above average. Straight Jacket Fashion stirs thing around a little more, and show when they start to experiment and deviate from the obvious, its all the better for it. One of the better tracks. The Fad has a few really great parts. Nice vocals and some great, heavy riffing. Humanoid also has some great points, and is another decent track. Finally we get a few good hooks on Paint The Seconds, but its just too late, and by now you’ll be sick of the album. But a decent enough song. Midnight is just more of the same, but they do themselves a favour with I Get It, and actually pull out a Killers-style affair, not bad at all. They finish up with a pretty solid effort, but its much the same as the rest.
CONCLUSION
I wanted to like this album. I turned it on and it sounded beefy and rocking, that didn’t last long. Nearly every song sounds the same, and its all very laboured and formulaic. In a full set of 11 songs, they just fail to deliver any great hooks and very few memorable performances. Alone, some of these songs sound really great, but that same, saturated, thick digital sound can give you a headache after 11 identical tracks. The guys are obviously running out of steam, they better do something fast, because even the biggest fan will tire of this album quickly.
