OVERVIEW

Eighth studio album from The Cult, and second album since their reunion earlier this century. There were uneven reactions to their last album, and this will no doubt be the same.

SONGS

The title song has their older classic sound, and like many from this album, it just cruisers along at a medium pace, creating a mature feeling, rather than a quick hook. Citizens has a real 80’s David Bowie/Cure type feel, and is a well written affair. Diamonds is a little thin, and lead-off single Dirty Little Rockstar has promise to be a great rocker, and while it does well  – the remix feel and production make it sound a little forced. The acoustic Holy Mountain starts off great, but for some reason Astbury just can’t seem to nail it. I Assassin gets down to a more hard rock feel, and is probably one of the best here. Illuminated is another cool rocker that is very reminiscent of their classic 80’s work and Astbury finally pulls out all the stops with the great Tiger In The Sun. The album continues to get better with the rocking Savages and Sound of Destruction finishes things off nicely; making the last three tracks the best.

CONCLUSION

This is a hard album to rate. It actually starts off very slow, but still strong. The middle section just seems weak, but it soars on the last couple of songs. It’s definitely not the kind of album that will win any new fans, but should please the old ones. The weak moments are bad, and the raw and sometimes uneven production doesn’t help. But when they’re on fire and rocking out hard, they sound fresh as they did 20 years ago.
