OVERVIEW

Chris Daughtry finished in the top 10 on the 5th season of American Idol but did not win. Due to his pop/rock nature, he lost to Taylor Hicks, who had a stronger ability to sing in different genres. Interestingly enough, RCA signed Chris and his band, whom they called Daughtry, and record sales quickly passed Taylor Hicks

SONGS

"It's Not Over" - the first single off the CD. A standard rock feel, but quality lyrics and produced quite nicely. - "Used To" The whole CD is a standard pop/rock feel without much difference in songs. This one seems like more of a filler, however. "Home" - Written entirely by Chris Daughtry, this song stands out with good lyrics for anyone experiencing anything new and a great melody - "Over You" has one of the catchiest choruses with Chris showing his raspy vocals, high range, and vocal versatility. "Crashed" - is a pretty rocking song with a good hook. "Feels Like Tonight" - is one of two songs on the CD that Chris didn't do any writing on but is arguably the second or third best song on the CD. It also has soaring vocals and a great melody. "Breakdown" - is one of the songs that Chris wrote entirely. It's very melodic both clean and heavy. A great song. "What I Want" - is a great rocking song that features Slash and his mean solo on the guitar. Enough said. "Gone" - strikes me as a filler on the CD. It is actually a good song but it only uses two stanza verses, which rips the substance from the song. "There And Back Again" - is a really rocking song but the hook is somewhat dull compared to the rest of the CD. Chris really gives a Shinedown feel in the song that makes up for the weaker hook, keeping the listener's hands away from the dial. "All These Lives" - is a great song with quality lyrics. It really delivers a strong message against hurting people. The lyrics are a little odd in that they don't focus on typical emotions, but it is performed very well. A very good, passionate song. - "What About Now" has a somewhat similar feel to the song "Feels Like Tonight," which adds up since it is the only other track Chris did not have a hand in writing. It has a good build, worth listening to. - "Sorry" - is a bonus track on the album that was unfortunately not included when I bought my album. I did a preview of it on iTunes, since I couldn't purchase it there, and it sounded as if it had more an acoustic pop feel, with lots of vocal processing. An interesting twist to the CD that should make it all the more worth looking into.

CONCLUSION

While Chris Daughtry only has one sound that didn't give him the victory as an American Idol winner, he gives his fans a great product. Chris takes the CD not only to win the pop genre fans, but also the rockers. And while each song doesn't greatly vary in style from one to the next, giving forth a solid pop/rock effort, the moods of each song really captures a wide range of emotions. From heartache to love, from depression to hope, and from safety to adventure, this American Idol contestant truly captures America.
