OVERVIEW

This must be one of the most obvious grabs at some quick cash a major record label has ever made. Sometime in 2004 Cleopatra managed to get hold of the right of these early Hollywood Rose demo’s, and somehow fill it out into a full record, not to mention calling it 'The Roots Of Guns N Roses. For those of you who don’t know, Hollywood Rose was Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlins’s pre Guns N Roses band. The demos feature what would become several of GNR’s early numbers, especially Anything Goes, which ended up on Appetite For Destruction.

SONGS

Fans of Live @!&# Like A Suicide will be familiar with the sounds of early Guns N Roses, and this is no different. 1st track Killing Time is a pretty good early jam and I’m surprised GNR didn’t take it on their first E.P. instead of the covers, not bad at all. Obviously the production lacks compared to A.F.D, however the original version of Anything Goes actually shows great, great potential, in fact except for the chorus, I would actually say this is a much better version, the riffing in the 1st verse is particularly great. Next up is Rocker, where Axl strains on his early vocal ability, a little like Reckless Life. Only not as great. Fanatic GNR fans have probably heard various versions of Shadow Of Your Love, and while it had a lot of potential, it sounds messy and dated here. Lastly is the original demo of the great Suicide opener Reckless Life. What interesting to note is the Floyd Rose whammy dives sounding like a motorcycle, pre-dating Motley Crues Kickstart My Heart by years. The song in general actually sounds reminiscent of early Motley Crue. While the chords progression is the same, the guitar is very noticeably different . I couldn’t say it is better than the version with Slash, but it is very cool, and rocks more where the Suicide version is much more of a groove

I’m not going to go through each remix and rate them etc, they are basically the same songs above with better production and sound quality. Tracii Guns on the remix of Reckless Life is great and is probably the only one with any business being added. The rest is as you would expect.

CONCLUSION

While it was good to hear these songs remixed with a fatter sounds, it didn’t need to be done twice on the same disc, and I would have much rather a collection of early Guns demos mixed with these. There are several GNR bootlegs that float around, with early demos of November Rain and several others.

As a massive Gunners fan, I was stoked to find this new release, as I hadn’t heard any of it at all. The first 5 five were actually a blast to listen to, the rest is just selling filler. Great E.P., crap L.P.
