OVERVIEW
Mass is another one of those great sleaze rock bands that just got lost in the shuffle for many. I for one have always known they were underrated, and this album was a long time coming for their loyal fans.
SONGS
It’s You cranks out with a classic riff with an introspective undertone. Great start to the album. The title track takes on a completely different tone, and the vocals screech like it’s a 1986 Hollywood club. Ballad, Someday, does well to stray away from the cliché’s, and they churn out a heartfelt number with some great lead work. Empty Soul is a really great rocker, with a nice heavy breakdown. The vocal tone to Hello is a change of pace, and turns into a great acoustic-styled number. The sleazy Magic Train oozes 80’s Hollywood (think Faster Pussycat etc.) and insane Monkey Brain seems odd at first, but eventually gets stuck your head – well, in your brain (I’m not a monkey!). Sweet Lady Jane is more of the same, and while its all been done before, this song also grows on you. Seven Days is another winner, as is Castle. Leaving You bleeds straight in from Castle, and does even better, great vocals and terrific heavy ending, love it. Mass pull it all together and rock out hard on the great modern album closer Who Am I.
CONCLUSION
This is a very solid effort and serves as not only a great relief for long-time fans, but also a great introduction for new fans that missed them the first time around. A few more hooks here and there wouldn’t have hurt; but in many places this album shows some real songwriting maturity. Good hard rock.
