OVERVIEW
Dave Mustaine has had more people through his band than Paris Hilton has had through her…okay, no. You get the point. It seems like a revolving door over at the Megadeth camp. If that’s not confusing enough for fans, Dave has managed to see the light through his proud eyes and given his life to God. All eyes are on this album.
SONGS
The opening, Sleepwalker sounds well produced, the chugging guitars come in and it sounds like ’83, hell yeah. This song is a great return to form and only gets stronger as the CD goes by. Great riffs on Washington, and really hammers in the political topic of the album. It shows how well this guy can mix heaviness with melodicness, awesome stuff. Never Walk Alone is a great, catchy track, and will be remembered. United Abominations is a short epic, and at first the lyrics seem bashfull and clumsy, but before long, this gem will get caught in your head. A Tout Le Monde seems like a cheap re-hash at a distance, but Dave has thoughtfully changed the lyrics for his new found outlook and enlisted the help of mega-chick vocalist Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil. Sensational. Your Dead and Burnt Ice will appeal to the long term fans, as it really seems a return to the past.
CONCLUSION
I love this CD. Its definitely one of the (if not the best) albums Dave Mustaine has done. Die hards will typically refer to the standard classic albums as the best, and always will. But at very least, this is a great return to form. The production is great, and truth be told, the heaviness is more akin to a kind of faster Ozzy sound than a typical Megadeth album. Dave doesn’t mind slowing things down for his political rant, but he has also unleashed his melodic side, and seems to take a few cues from European metallers. Megadeth should actually win some new fans with this one, and hopefully keep the old ones happy. Not a weak song. Great abomination indeed.
