OVERVIEW
No one ever knows what’s going on with Ozzy. The dude is never gonna die, and he certainly refuses to give up on his musical career. Although he’s given touring a rest for now, he decided to dust off Zakk and the boys, to see if they could rock it out for another try.
SONGS
His attentions are clear from the main lyric of Not Going Away ;). First thing you notice is the typical Zakk groove. The production is a mile cleaner than anything Black Label has done, and Ozzy’s voice comes in sounding as it ever did. Decent song. I don’t Wanna Stop really seems to go into the territory of No More Tears, and is perhaps where they were trying to head. It has a great beat and a real Rob Zombie type feel. Think Zombie Stomp (No More Tears). Black Rain has some good sounds; this thing could have been really great, but just misses the spot. Great harp from Zakk! Lay Your World On Me is a typical Ozzy ballad affair, includes some great instrumental work, though a little over produced. Finally Silver gets things going. The lyrics are more about him getting old and not going away etc. Great groove-laden and fast paced rocker. One of the best here, and my favorite. Civilize The Universe is a decent stab, not bad. Here For You is even more typical of an Ozzy ballad, and does much better, especially thanks to Zakk Wylde, whose piano work and tasty licks, keep this thing great. Countdown has a heavier chug and is all the better for it, great song actually, should have been higher in the playlist. Although the production is questionable, Trap Door is a kickarse end to the album.
CONCLUSION
Hate to say it, but I’m disappointed by Ozzy again. Sure, there are some great cuts in there, but it’s not the album fans have been hoping for. There are also some great heavy moments, but this is often offset by the crystal clear production and synth that constantly sneaks its way back in. They seem to be heading for a real No More Tears Thing, and I would have been stoked with that! It’s no No More Tears though. Even though the feel of this album is a lot better than the last few, it still fails to provide a few killer tracks, like Gets Me Through (from Down To Earth). At least you can hear some great work from Zakk, but even he seems to have resigned this album to a side-project. Where he used to save his killer songs for Ozzy and lay the rest on Black Label, I’m sure he’s done the opposite. And fair enough too. I know some will complain it sounds too much like black Label, with all Zakk’s work. But to me, that’s almost the only saving grace. To sum it up, I'd say it just seems, well...boring.
