OVERVIEW

It’s no secret than I’m not a big fan of cover albums. They usually symbolise a need for a band to get some commercial material out ASAP, to facilitate a tour or similar. This is no different. In fact, it seems the main fact that this album has come around was for Capitol to make the most of Bret Michaels’ up and coming TV show, therefore using his talkshow appearances etc. as platforms to sell the album. Plus a huge upcoming tour. I’m a big Poison fan, so when I heard their next release would be a cover effort; I was disappointed to say the least. I figured this was the last straw of what has become a falling star. At first listen, I thought I heard exactly as I expected. A few spins later and strangely things started looking up…

SONGS

Little Willy is a terrible opener, and in my opinion is one of the worst here. Suffragette City would have been a better choice. This was a perfect example of what I expected and was immediately bored with, but after several plays realise it’s a great tune! I Never Cry is a sensational ballad for these guys, and Michaels sings the hell out of it. Great job. Even cooler is the near perfect cover of Tom Petty’s I Need To Know. I missed it at first, now I think it’s probably the best here! Naturally The Marshall Tucker number Can’t You See suits Bret’s style perfect (apparnetly he did his guitar and vocals at the same time, on the first take!) and the production has been used very well, another great one. What I Like About You was unexpected, but is just so rocking! It’s no surprise they released this as the first single, great job, this will get stuck in your head all day! Dead Flowers is another winner, but Michaels tries too hard to sound like Jagger! Oh, big mistake. It sounds like he’s trying to sing with a British accent at times, C.C. does a good job though, as he does on most of the album. Just What I Needed gets the record back on track, they give it a Cheap Trick feel, and it’s another highlight. The rest of the songs can be found on other album reviews on this site.

CONCLUSION

Wow! I’m just so surprised; this has been the most played album in my house over the last week. Never thought I’d be writing that. Give this album a chance and it will grow on you, just so catchy, and the production is great. It couldn’t be further away from the terrible Hollyweird. I know they just threw this together quickly, but they’ve done such a great job, and it has such a feel-good vibe. Pity they couldn’t have laid down another 2 songs and made it a full album, instead of filling it up with old stuff; Mama Don’t Dance, Rock N Roll All Nite & American Band were just out last year on the greatest hits album; let alone their original albums. And Don't Mess Around With Jim was released last year with the remastered collection as a bonus track on Cat Dragged In. Unfortunately this sours what is essentially one of the best cover albums I’ve heard. Seeing these guys get back on Capitol is a massive boost for rock, and they’ve done a great job. I know this album will get shot down everywhere, but I say give it a chance. 7 killer new songs out of 13 are worth your cash.
