OVERVIEW

After all the years on tour with Ozzy, I’m sure Zakk had enough of the evil rockstar posing and wanted to get back to his roots. Thus he formed Pride & Glory. It made a few waves when it was released, but the band soon disintegrated, much to mine and many others disappointment. Luckily though he was almost forced to record his solo album, which was just as good as this one. But for now, let’s check out Pride & Glory. The first and last.

SONGS

If you only know Zakk for his heavier stuff, then straight out of the bat, you will be surprised, because the first thing you hear is a banjo! Losin’ Your Mind is a great southern rock number that really sets the style. This was the album’s single. The up-tempo  Horse Called War is great, another sible with more of Zakk’s great vocal delivery. Shine in has a great intro and Zakk gets to bust out with his harp. The sensational acoustic number Lovin Woman is just that, sensational. Harvester Of Pain is probably my favourite on the record. It just has a great vibe and some of Zakk’s best vocal melodies. Love all the guitar in it, what a winner. After the Chosen One, we get into the first piano ballad with Sweet Jesus. This guy can play the hell out of anything! I love thing song,  it is completely heartfelt and it really shows his depth.  Some great slide work on Troubled Wire, nice chorus too. Machine Gun man was another popular song from the album, and a great song it is. Top notch acoustic number with Cry Me A River.  We get heavy and groovin’ with Toe’n The Line. Then he breaks out into his darker piano ballad, Fading Away. What a masterpiece.  Pride & Glory finishes up with an all in hillbilly sing a long! Ala Skynyrd. Love it. There is also a bonus disk version with some Sabbath covers and a kick-arse version of Come Together by the Beatles.

CONCLUSION

There aren’t too many negative things I can say about this album, in fact, it is one of my all time favourites. It may take a while to get into. It took me a while to warm to, now I can’t imagine why, because I still listen to it all the time. If you like Skynyrd or Allman Brothers, then you’re gonna dig this. Hardcore Ozzy and Black Label fans might be disappointed at first, but like I said, give it a chance. Not a single bad song in the lot. Pity the band didn’t last long.
