OVERVIEW

This is an unbelievable 17th release for Saxon, and these are still showing no sign of letting up. All the trademarks are here, and although it would be hard to top their previous release, they give it their best shot.

SONGS

A very cool and moody intro starts Inner Sanctum out with class. The drums slowly build into the climatic State Of Grace. And although the drums go into overtime, the rest of the song had little to offer. Need For Speed keeps the drums pounding at a daunting pace, and while it tries to rehash Wheels Of Steel, its not a bad effort. Let Me Feel Your Power is more of the straight ahead metal romp, average. Finally we get to Red Star Falling and a little more credibility. Good lyrics and a decent song. It seems it just took a while to warm up, because next comes the sensational I’ve Got To Rock, great melodies and beat challenge even AC/DC. If I Was You keeps the roll going and now I’m starting to get interested in the album, these guys really have still got it. Going Nowhere Fast is another Acca Dacca style romp, decent enough. The anthemic Ashes To Ashes shows what this band can really do. Empire Rising just acts as an intro to the epic Atila The Hun, which is average and tries too hard, very dated.

CONCLUSION

I think half of this album is great and the other half is very average. Saxon have always had uneven releases, and this is no different. They stray more into hard rock territory on this release more than ever, and I think it only helps their sound. The NWOBHM style just sounds dated. This album barely makes a 3. Good enough.
