OVERVIEW

Scorpions have been around longer than nearly any other hard rock outfit. They’ve been spitting out their brand of rock for so long, it’s hard to believe that they are here again, ready to churn out another offering for the fans. They’ve gone on record to say that this could be the last effort for the German rockers. Let’s see how they fared….

SONGS

It’s no surprise to hear that they’ve incorporated songwriter-for-hire; John 5 from the get go. Hour 1 has a thumping industrial sound, and while long time fans will be sceptical, it is pretty rocking, and lo-and-behold, Klaus’ voice is still as it always was. The Game Of Life is akin to classic Scorpions, and a classic it is! This is what the fans want, and they deliver it in a near perfect way. We Were Born To Fly kicks off with the intensity of a band that has set out to make a statement, and they make it with this song. Strong songs like this make you think guys like the Scorpions could stay around forever. They manage to stay fresh but still retain the classic sound they are renowned for.  Epic ballad The Future Never Dies includes haunting piano, and you start to realise this album is great! Klaus’ voice hasn’t been tainted in nearly 40 years of singing! You’re Loving Me To Death may look like a nu-metal industrial flavoured number on the outside, but really it’s the same style of song the Scorpions have been cranking out for years, with a new  guitar tone. Great song. I was ready to fault 321 at first, but man, that great melodic chorus kicked in and I knew it was another winner. Love Will Keep Us Alive is another great ballad, the guys show such growth and maturity on this disc.  We Will Rise Again really starts to mix old with new, some fans may be annoyed at the chorus, but for others this is magic, defiantly single material. Smooth lead tones usher in Your Last Song and is one of the best songs. Love Is War is another great number, but by now the formula is starting to show, and wear a little thin. They grab Billy Corgan on board for The Cross, but it doesn’t help save it, still decent though. The album finishes up with first single Humanity, and the lyrics point explicably towards saying goodbye and ending.  If this truly is their last album, this is one killer rock song to leave on, it’d be sad to see them go.

CONCLUSION

On first listen I didn’t think much, but now I realise how solid this album is. Sure they will never have classic’s like Rock You Like A Hurricane again or ballads like Wind Of Change, but what they do have here is one hell of a great disc from start to finish. Every song is good and some are sensational. The lyrics are just as good and it pulls together like a concept album. If this truly is their last, it would be a great ending. They did well to bring in other songwriters like hitmaker Desmond Child to help bring out the melodics.  Although the production is  flawless, it can grate after a while. Upon ending the album and hearing the quirky music fade out, I can’t help but think the Scorpions have more to say, even after all this time.
