OVERVIEW
Motley Crue is starting to become the business equivalent of KISS. Every corner I turn and page I load, I see or read some kind of promotional advertising for a Vince Neil Cruise, or a Tommy Lee TV-show. The only saving grace for Motley Crue is; where KISS put their name to any piece of money making venture available, the Crue have managed to release (and this album may be proof) material that remains somewhat relevant. Nikki SIxx is following his best buddies example and has decided to churn out a series of books; the first being the promising, Heroin Diaries. Like his mate Tommy, he has also released a soundtrack to coincide. While Tommy might take you on a wild ride; Nikki is taking us somewhere much darker.
SONGS
The 1st track out sets the scene as Nikki narrates the first part from his book. The song is chilling and dark. Sensational start. Van Nuys begins out with some haunting piano lines, and an equally chilling lyrics. This song turns into a great catchy bass-heavy rocker. One of the best here. Life Is Beautiful is another great tune, definitely radio friendly. Even more-so is Pray For Me, which changes gear for a moment, with its boppy back beat. Tomorrow is another winner, single potential there. Accidents Can Happen is in stark contrast to some of the more bleaker moments, and is a soaring and inspirational gem. Following the Intermission, things turn dark with the sorrowful, but great Dead Man’s Bullet, which takes you down with it. Girl With Golden Eyes is another highlight. It finishes up with the frantic and partly narrated Life After Death.
CONCLUSION
What a ride. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this album. First off the bat, it has to be said; people wanting and/or expecting the Crue will be sorely disappointed. This resembles nothing they ever did, and is a very modern sounding album. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t great. Because it certainly is.
The over mixed bass and low end can become tiresome, but the rest is without blemish. This is radio-ready modern hard rock. Not a weak tune on the album, and Nikki should be commended on his work. At what first looks like a self-indulged artistic fling, is infact a deep and revealing work of love.
The narration may seem strange, with Nikki’s deep and comic book like voice. But it grows on you, and turns into one hell of a concept album. Bravo Mr. Sixx. Bravo indeed.
