OVERVIEW
Even though Ted Poley has proven himself time and time again as a great singer and songwriter, he rarely manages to make it past cult status. Ted hasn’t changed styles much since his heyday in Danger Danger, if anything he has just refined his skills in the melodic rock genre, and he seems to be getting better and better each year. His last album Collateral Damage got nothing but rave reviews, and his long lost album Disappearing Inc. from his band Bone Machine has now been released on iTunes and is getting some resurgence. This release comes hot off the heels of news that a brand new Danger Danger album will be coming out within months. But does Ted need them?
SONGS
From the get go, we hear the infectiously melodic rock of Waiting Line and are transported to that special place that only a select few can take you. The production is superb and immediately reminds me of the above mentioned Bone Machine album - great song. It is followed up by the beautiful and easy-going Going Blind. The title track is more of a Dnager Danger styled outing, but with Ted’s more personal laid back attitude, another winner. What If She Knew is pretty typical of what Ted usually does in a love song, and he does it well enough. Ballad, More Than Goodbye is another fairly typical affair with some decent lyrics – very 80’s. Luv On Me has a shuffle feel and a good groove, and If I Can’t Change Your Heart oozes an 80’s feel with its heavy synth and dramatic guitar. Why Cant We? Is classic Poley, but it seems to be rushed and a little forced; including the dazzling lead break. He gets back to the melodic stuff with Life Keeps Spinning Me Around, and Where It Ends does much better in the ballad department; beautiful song, with another great lead. Will Ya is a little heavier on the guitars, but the layered vocals of Ted make it another perfect melodic rock masterpiece. The reprise, however, is surprisingly a little disappointing.
CONCLUSION
Although the disc doesn’t have those few tracks that jump out and tell me this is dynamite, it is a very sold and complete album. It does best when it sticks to the perfect melodies of song like Waiting Line or Will Ya. If you are a Ted fan, this is a must own, and one of the best he has ever done. The next Danger Danger album will have to be something special to hold up to this.
