OVERVIEW

Van Halen had slowly started to make changes. And with 1984, Eddies Van Halen's future vision had come full circle. Blending the perfect mix of synth-laden pop hits and guitar-pyrotechnic rockers, it isn’t a coincidence that this is the biggest album of their career. The popularity would alienate long time fans and eventually cause the departure of David Lee Roth, which they would remarkably recover from, but never return to.

SONGS

After a moody, but dated intro the album launches straight into their biggest hit. Whether you love it or hate it, Jump’s up-lifting lyrics and infectious groove brings a smile to your face every time. Just so old fans wouldn’t lose interest, in blazers Panama, one of their best rockers ever. With sing-a-long chorus and a brilliantly moody interlude, this is Van Halen at its 80’s best. But this album never lets up and delivers the great Top Jimmy, the sleazy Drop Dead Legs and the absolutely sensational Hot For Teacher. They get back into synth-pop territory with the inspired I’ll Wait. It finishes up with the strong Girl Gone Bad, and the great, but out of place here House Of Pain

CONCLUSION

Many consider this to be the starting of the end for Van Halen, while others argue it was their definitive peak. I believe it was both. Though incomparable to their debut, 1984 has more hooks than a bait shop and still manages to deliver all the guitar and front man antics that was always expected of them. Though the album is great, it’s a little short of definitive. You can’t help but think it’s lacking just a little, and that’s probably due to its short track list (just 8 full songs). Most of it still sounds great, more than 20 years later. It makes you wonder ‘what if?’ they had kept on growing together.
