OVERVIEW

The word underrated gets thrown around a lot when discussing lesser-known rock bands of the 80’s. I have a personal list of my  favourites, but once I heard this album, it hit the top of the list. Though I had heard the bands name thrown around, I doubted they would deliver anything fresh that hadn’t already been covered by Motley Crue or perhaps Skid Row. I was very wrong.

SONGS

Once you take a couple of listens to any of these songs, they’ll be in your head for good. Its starts off with the sensational Secrets, including an especially great chorus, the pre chorus is also genius. Lead off single Beat The Bullet is next and serves up another dish of melodic hard rock splendour, Davy’s voice dominates this and every other song on the album, and what a voice. Who’s Watching You is one of my favourites, and is full of poppy hooks under that muddy distortion and sleazy vocals, oh so catchy. They touch on power ballad territory with 1000 Degrees. Davy sounds like a beefed up Vince Neil on parts, but takes it to another level with the chorus, which actually sounds a little like earlier era AFI! They get mean with Aces and succeed again; they can do no wrong at this stage. All the songs tend to follow a similar formula, with a grinding verse riff and a great melodic sing-a-long chorus. No Respect is a great rocking anthem. Icy is absolute kick arse, as is every song on this album!

CONCLUSION

I can’t go through every track because most of them are absolutely sensational. What a great album. The only bad thing is most of it is similar and Davy’s vocals (although some of the best I’ve heard) completely dominate the mix, which can wear thin and tire the listener. Vain have got the hardest rockers and the coolest ballads. Most underrated band from the late 80’s, if you love the era, get this now!
