OVERVIEW
Mark Tremonti started up the band Alter Bridge shortly after his old band, Creed, broke up, primarily due to Scott Stapp's "issues". Mark practiced for about a year... and he practiced alot. Within a year's time, the band that was Creed became a hard rocking band, taking a classic rock feel, combining with metal and soaring melodic vocal melodies. Disappointingly enough, this rocking band's first single was a Creed sound-alike. The band gained enough fame, radio play, and publicity to win some of the fans back but they repelled the fans who hated Creed due to Scott Stapp, which was not the goal of Alter Bridge. The band learned from their mistake and released rock song after rock song to the radio but never gained enough airplay to show who Alter Bridge really was.
SONGS
The CD starts off rocking hard with "Find The Real," a great song with blazing guitar riffs and solo - "One Day Remains" doesn't change the flow, giving somewhat of a metal feel with a shredding into - "Open Your Eyes" follow and you ask what the hell just happened? This catchy song sounds like Creed overdubbed Myles Kennedy, however if you can make it to the guitar solo you begin to respect the band ... for a little while - "Burn It Down" is a bit strange lyrically but grows into a driving song that demands some positive attention - "Metalingus" as the name suggests, is a metal song that just rocks. Rocking fills, pinch harmonics, and melodic vocals scream as this song plays - "Broken Wings" is really terribly lyrically. Save for the cool blues guitar that Mark plays and the catchy chorus, this song is played out after one or two spins - "In Loving Memory" is a pretty standard song that doesn't demand too much attention. Written about his deceased mother, the lyrics are inspiring but it's not what you came to AB to hear - "Down to My Last" is arguably the best song on the CD. The solo is cool, the vocals soar, and it's got a tune that stays in your head for days. - "Watch Your Words" is a little odd. It's somewhat of a filler in my opinion but has a decent rock feel that makes it worth listening to - "Shed My Skin" is a great slower song that has a unique sound, unlike a typical ballad - "The End Is Here" sounds a little like some Creed songs but rocks enough that makes it tolerable.
CONCLUSION
Alter Bridge makes a debut that kicks Creed in the rear. If you like Hard Rock but like Creed, don't like Creed, or have never even heard of Creed ... check these guys out. Everyone who hates Creed I've referred this album to has had positive things to say. Don't let Creed keep you away. A great CD that will stay in the player for weeks.
