OVERVIEW
Zakk Wylde and his posse jumped straight back in the studio for yet another quick release. Recorded nearly live and with as much grit and attitude as is possible, they came rocketing back into the world. These guys don’t seem to be giving up any time soon. And with Ozzy’s new album coming out in a few months, Zakk must be as busy as ever.
SONGS
Things start out very strong with the single Concrete Jungle, complete with a kick arse video; this is what Zakk seems to be leaning to. 2nd single Black Mass Reverend pales in comparison, but is still likable. Blacked Out World starts off a little different for BLS, but soon turns into another great rocker, an album highlight. The first ballad The Last Goodbye showcases Zakk’s piano ability, this one grows on you. This is where they start to go from ballad to rocker and back for the rest of the album, I like it. Give Yourself To Me starts and stops, not bad. Nothings The Same is another good ballad. Hell Is High is a very typical rocker from this album, and its great too. With its 2 minute piano intro New Religion is one of the strongest tracks. Great chorus, great song. Sick Of It All recalls more Book Of Shadows era, and does well. Faith Is Blind is heavy as hell. Blood Is Thicker Than Water is another above-average ballad that shuffles along. Things finish off nicely with Lead Me To Your Door.
CONCLUSION
Another pretty solid effort from Zakk and his boys. I really like the back and forth energy of the soft and heavy tracks, though none of the ballads compare to those on Mafia. Things just keep going forward for BLS, and although it seems to work for them, it would be great for them to sit in and take a little time for their next album; they could probably make an incredible record. Either way, this is another solid release, a little under Mafia, but some very strong tracks. I can help but think it was made with its predecessor in mind; hopeful Zakk won’t become too formulaic. This album is still concrete though.
