OVERVIEW
This album is everything a pop/rock album should be, and it became a benchmark to that genre. Plenty of cheesy keyboards and corny themes make it somewhat dated. But with hooks galore and Sambora's lead work sneaking in sometimes, Bon Jovi had no peers. After a disappointing sophomore effort, they teamed up with miracle hit-maker; Desmond Child and hotshot producer; Bruce Fairbairn, to make one of the best selling rock albums ever.
SONGS
We get straight into business with a short intro and harmony vocals with Let It Rock. But it pales in comparison to You Give Love A Bad name, which punches you in the face with Ritchie's melodic lead work. The hit machine keeps on rolling into probably their best song Living On A Prayer, pop/rock doesn't get any better than that. The horrible and out of place Social Disease is excusable before getting back on the wagon with the legendary Wanted. With songs that good you couldn't blame the band for slowing down, but they launch into Raise Your Hands out of nowhere. With its awesome riff and shout-a-long chorus, this is an underrated Jovi classic. The album closes up with several sulky and high produced ballads, before finishing up with the feel-good Wild In The Streets. CONCLUSION
Coming close to a Greatest Hits album as it is (Bad Name, Prayer, Wanted, Raise Your Hands, Never Say Goodbye etc.) You have to admire the work that went into this album. Its sounds a little cheesy today, but Bon Jovi would have sunk into obscurity without it. It stands as their best work and most original. They would constantly try to emulate it, but rarely succeeded. A real pop/rock masterpiece.
