OVERVIEW
Australian rockers COG have really amassed a cult following for themselves, as well as a very unique sound. While being able to include 10-minute prog-rock epics, they also manage to cross over to more chart orientated songs. Things look very promising for these guys.
SONGS
Real Life is an all round typical COG venture, including everything you’ve come to expect from these guys, great stuff. Anarchy OK is a textured, but uneven song. Silence Is Violence is an incredibly moody affair that turns to an in-your-face rocker at times, great song. A wall of sound eventually hits you once the intro has finished on Resonate, proving to be another winner. Things change a little for The Spine, with a groovy bass line and shimmering guitar textures, it also breaks out into a great guitar mid-section, awesomely intense sounds. Things change into more compact form for lead off single My Enemy, which is absolute killer. Second single Run is a similar radio-friendly affair, another winner. Things slowly build up for The River Song, and it takes you on a great journey, at times the spoken lyric can take too much space, another intense track. Charades is rocking COG at their best, a little messy though at times. Doors is the first of two 10-minute epics, and this shows where the band really shine. Naming The Elephant is almost identical in structure, and contains some great vocal harmonising.
CONCLUSION
If it’s the first time listening you’ve listened to COG, the first thing you notice is the unique sound they posses, which is what makes it so fresh. The album contains little filler at all, however the sound does become repetitive. Nearly every song includes a slow section, followed by a heavier chorus section. Though they do it differently than the way others have done in the past, it leaves space for little variation. A very strong effort, which will be hard to follow.
