OVERVIEW
The Crue’s albums are always uneven affairs, and Girls is a prime example. Its starts off hot and driving and ends in a slump of boredom and mediocrity. Lacking the ballads like Home Sweet Home and left without the hard rocking riffs of Shout At The Devil, Girls is a fair disappointment.
SONGS
Things start unbelievably well with the hard rocking of Wild side. Tommy Lee ushers in the album with his cowbell and Mick lets roar with his ferocious guitar attack. Girls, Girls, Girls bops along with a catchy, sleazy atmosphere that is well known. Things still look good with the underrated, but over produced Dancing On Glass, a tongue in cheek parable about cocaine. Bad Boy Boogie tries hard, but fails to really go anywhere. Nona is a short heartfelt ballad about Nikki Sixx’s grandmother. The album is clattered with filler after this and the production really shows its age. Things finish up on a light note with the live cover Jail House Rock, which Mick Mars manages to butcher with his messy fingers.
CONCLUSION
I give them a hard time because I really know they are capable of so much more. All big fans will want it anyway, and will find enough joy in it. But casual fans need not bother, as with Theatre Of Pain. It’s a pity the Crue couldn’t have pulled it together for a few more decent albums. But I guess that’s what makes them Motley. Take a ride on the Wild side? Amen.
