OVERVIEW

The Leppard faced an un-parallelled challenge ahead of them following the Hysteria album. Rick had lost his arm and Steve Clarke had sadly passed on, not to mention the pressure of following up a 15 million plus seller. Un-surprisingly they didn’t manage to come close to Hysteria, and although others would lead you to believe that the album is a flop, there is still plenty of good listening here. It’s not in the league of Hysteria, but still has its moments.

SONGS

It starts off in cheesy Leppard style with the Pour Some Sugar On Me styled; Lets Get Rocked. The song has its moments, however it is obviously contrived and really showed its flaws when released on the edge of the grunge era -1992! Heaven Is starts off the Bryan Adams-style pop songs that fill this album. It’s not Def Leppard at its rocking best, buts it’s still well written and enjoyable. Make Love is similarly contrived and is embarrassingly cheesy. Luckily the albums best track Tonight is next, and helps save the album in Bringing On The Heartbreak style. Again the non-single tracks help save this album with the great White Lightning. Things keep rolling with the sensational feel good rocker Stand Up, but dip down a little with the average Personal Property. The huge ballad Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad helps the Leppard back up, then ends in rocking fashion with Tear It Down.

CONCLUSION

Though this album has its low points overall it’s a pretty solid affair. Individually the tracks don’t look so good, however; together they somehow make a great listen. It’s nowhere in the league of the Hysteria, or Pyromania either, for that matter, but once you put it on you’ll feel better for doing so. It just doesn’t deliver any of the big songs that made Hysteria so great, and a little spirit is lost without Steve Clarke.
