OVERVIEW

After the average High N Dry and before the gleaming pop Hysteria, the Leppard boys recorded some of the best rock of the 80’s with Pyromania. After firing alcoholic guitarist Pete Willis, Phil Collen stepped in and the rest is history.

SONGS

Things come stomping out with Rock, Rock, later used on the Rockstar movie and many others, this is Def Leppard in pure rock mode; they never rocked like this again. The superb Photograph is next, giving the band their first hit, and deservingly so. The live intro to Stagefright sets the scene for this blazing rocker with a first-class chorus. Too Late For Love is almost a slow tempo rock epic, a paramount performance. Die Hard The Hunter continues this fashion, and it IS an epic number from Leppard. Pop/rock ballad Foolin’ lays the template for successors like Love Bites, but less contrived and more rocking, another real highlight. The next single Rock Of Ages is a classic rock anthem, average verses, but a sensational chorus. Comin’ Under Fire keeps the lush chorus’ coming. Action is an older style Leppard affair that pales in comparison to its surroundings. Billy’s Got A Gun is another thriving pop/rock masterpiece

CONCLUSION

This is Def Leppard’s rock masterpiece. Many ways stronger than Hysteria, this is what Def Leppard should be remembered for. Production and arrangements years ahead of their time that still holds up today. Every chorus is great, every guitar line is epic. Pyromania has layers and layers of mood and grit that was painfully absent from its successor, a near perfect rock record.
