OVERVIEW

I don’t like indie rock, generally speaking.  And by that I don’t mean bands on independent labels, I mean the stuff that gets referred to as indie as a genre – bands like The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, and Broken Social Scene are usually the ones that have an uncanny tendency to slowly drive yours truly crazy.  However, I was given this EP some time ago by a friend of mine (by the way, thanks Jared), and decided that, in the interests of music journalism, I’d give it a shot.  And much to my surprise, I actually found myself enjoying some of what Edison Glass (formerly known as Mannafest) has to offer on this little 4-song disc that’s apparently supposed to serve as a primer for their recently released LP, “A Burn Or a Shiver”.  As far as what they sound like, if you can imagine a sound similar to Mae, Jonezetta, and The Juliana Theory, you’re not too far off.

SONGS

As this is a promotional EP, there’s only 4 songs on here, but all of them are pretty decent.  The kick-snare drum count of “Forever” quickly gives way to a Panic At The Disco-ish sort of groove, which works well but feels somewhat awkward against the more straightforward chorus.  “This House” has a decidedly more somber tone and strikes me as merely OK, but that sets us up for “Starlight”, which features what is easily the most memorable chorus on the record (and some cool delay effects, for you gear junkies!).  The EP closes with “A Burn Or a Shiver”, a slow, dreamy track that slowly crescendos into a great power-ballad-esque tune not unlike something The Juliana Theory might do.

CONCLUSION

Like I said, I generally don’t like this sort of music, but this EP was definitely a pleasant surprise that shows a lot of promise in an up-and-coming band.  Don’t be surprised if you hear more about these guys sometime soon.
