OVERVIEW

I never really got into the synth-heavy styling of Europe, as I’m sure many of you didn’t. The Final Countdown is where Europe started and finished for a lot of us. But 20 years later with their latest release, things sound a little heavier and actually not too bad. I wasn’t looking forward to this one so much, but its actually impressive.

SONGS

Straight off the bat, you can hear they’re already rocking more. Secret Society is a nice rocker, and showcases some really great lead-guitar work. Although Always The Pretender is robbed of its hardness a little, it really is a great rocker, and probably the best here. Love Is Not The Enemy is a heavy, well…European style rocker. It’s very modern and fairs well. Which I Could Believe has some strong lyrics from Europe and is another pretty strong track. Let The Children Play is a grittier rocker that isn’t too bad either. Human After All has a Velvet Revolver-like swagger that keeps it going along, while The Getaway Plan has an almost Black Label Society sound! A Mothers Son has a beautiful intro and sets up to be a great ballad, however lacks a few great hooks, still solid though. Forever Travelling continues on with the same style, only a little stronger this time. The urgency of Brave Beautiful Soul sucks you in, and delivers an almost Def Leppard-like riff in the chorus. Devil Sings The Blues finishes up the album in fairly strong fashion.

CONCLUSION

As it stands, this is just a great, solid rocker. Thankfully they’ve lost a lot of their cheesiness, however it is still over-produced in places. It really lacks the hooks, which only Always The Great Pretender really provided. Its still worth your dollars, and I’m sure fans should be happy with it. Decent job.
