OVERVIEW

80’s Christian hard rockers Guardian never rose to the heights of like-minded bands such as Stryper. But perhaps they should have. On their 1993 release the band get down and dirty with some great blues rock.

SONGS

Things start out hard and sleazy with Dr Jones, one part Aerosmith and Skid Row, it’s a great rocker that sets the tone for the whole album. Shoeshine Johnny is more of the same, with a great chorus. Cool song. The gritty Long Way Home is VERY Skid Row, but they do it well. The pace slows with I Found Love the first of several great ballads. It reminds me of Cinderella, except better! Black Crowes-like acoustics usher in Sweet Mystery, which is another killer ballad. Let It Roll is another hard rockin’ gem. Mr Do Wrong is a mean and stomping number, hurts your throat just hearing his voice, below-average chorus though and Curiosity is much the same. Sister Wisdom is a nice catchy hard rocker. The Tesla-like The Captain is another top-notch ballad, nice chorus. The pop/rock of You & I is an up-tempo rocker that is well welcomed. They close up with Do You Know What Love Is, a great stripped-back power ballad. Nice.

CONCLUSION

I was really surprised when I heard this album, that I hadn’t heard it sooner! While I wouldn’t say it’s sensational, it is a good solid effort for fans of the late 80’s blues/hard-rock bands. The vocalist is very similar to Tesla at times, but that only adds to the appeal. While it lacks any sensational singles (a few strong ballads though) there’s little to no filler. Check it out, you’ll be surprised.
