OVERVIEW

Hagar albums are always uneven affairs. However his latest offering is surprisingly strong. Straying away from his ‘classic’ style and fully amercing himself in his beach-hardy, party persona. This album is coastline fun from start to finish. It makes you want to pack up and head straight for the beach, maybe get a crowd going with the BBQ.

SONGS

It starts out with some great down-and-dirty swamp rock, complete with some nice slide work. Love this. Then Livin’ On A Coastline gets into some Caribbean relaxed rock, sensational stuff from Sammy. He picks up some strange rhythms and style with Mexico, and pulls it off too, which helps mix things up. The Way We Live goes back to their fun-living’ attitude, by now its getting infectious, and you want to’ head for the beach yourself. I Love This Bar shakes it up even more, sounding very country here with a Toby Keith cover, but doing it well, Sammy style. It that wasn’t enough, he changes style again with Rainy Day Women, doing his own spin on the Dylan classic, a bit of fun really. Hagar busts out even more country with Halfway To Memphis. This song is very heartfelt, and a little more Hagar familiar (in the vocal department anyway). I love this one. Sailin’ is heartfelt and beautiful, nice chilled back feeling, like a warm summers night, nice work Sammy. Take You There, which is actually a cover song and is more of the same, with a very U2-like riff, but then busts out about half way through, taking it back to Cabo Wabo! He bundles it all up and finishes up with the slow and soulful Some Day. What a ride.

CONCLUSION

Man, by the end of this album I absolutely loved it. You’re not going to get hard-rocking’ Hagar, but you’re going to get Sammy down in Mexico, living it up and just showing us all how happy he is. It makes you want to change lifestyles and get on board. He won me over on this one, and it almost makes you jealous. I’m actually shocked to say it, but it’s probably one of the best I’ve heard all year. Nice one Sammy.
