OVERVIEW

What can I say about this album? It heralded in a new age for rock and it stands (in my humble opinion) as the strongest overall album from the masked 4. 30 years and over 20 albums later, they’re still playing half of this album at their live shows. This marked the start for KISS and it’s their strongest and still most underrated album ever.

SONGS

Things don’t start out any better than Strutter. A fan favourite since the start, every woman and child can’t help but find something to like in tis old gem. Followed up by the raunchy live staple Firehouse, things just keep getting better with the Frehley classic Cold Gin. Sharp riffs and great Simmons vocals still sound killer today. The catchy Nothin’ to Lose rolls in, before Deuce roars in with ferocity that only Gene can muster. He scores again with the shimmering bass intro to 100,000 years, which could’ve been a forerunner for Guns N Roses’ Welcome To The Jungle intro. Things close out with the sensational Criss sung Black Diamond

CONCLUSION

Listening back to this album stuns me. How could they have released such a strong debut all those years ago, and rarely came even close to matching it. Simmons especially is impressive, long before his 80’s slump sunk in. Criss’ vocals are perfection on Black Diamond, long before he sunk into the pomp of Beth. This is somehow often eclipsed by Destroyer or Love Gun, but is stronger than both in so many ways. Take a trip back, you won’t be disappointed. Now remastered, there are no excuses. It’s Cold Gin time again!.
