OVERVIEW
KISS returned to their strongest form on Destroyer, which they begun on their debut. A list of well-produced, stellar rock anthems is what still holds this album up today. This is where the band started to show cracks though. Ace begun to stray into to darker areas and forced the band to seek hired guns for guitar duties on certain pieces. They never returned to this strong form again, so go and grab your piece of rock history.
SONGS
It starts off with a loud car crash and the main riff kicks in to Detroit Rock City – bang! bang! This is still KISS’ main stage opener and you can’t help but tap your foot, absolutely sensational stuff. Things slow down a little, but bop along with King Of The Night Time World. It pales in comparison though to Simmons’ booming God Of Thunder, with its heavy inspiring riff (think to the future with Enter Sandman!) it’s as heavy as KISS gets. Great Expectations is full of over-production and pomp, but Flaming Youth is great rock. It doesn’t get much better than the staple anthem Shout It Out Loud. The huge Criss ballad Beth complete with full orchestra is corny by today’s standards, but still shows some warmth and heart. Things finish off with the Stanley standard Do You Love Me, with its questionable verses, but great chorus.
CONCLUSION
From the get go this is KISS at their rocking best. Yes! I still love this album, and it’s easy to understand why it still gets so much attention. Half of the album is still in their live show. If you combined them with half of the debut, you’d have most of their show! It gets you up and excited, this is the peak of KISStory.
