OVERVIEW
I don’t know where this came from, but I think I’m the first person in the world to review the return of the 9 year absent Night Ranger. 9 years is a long time and 20 years since Big Life is even longer. A bit of money and time has been spent on this album, but I’m just not sure what to make of it.
SONGS
Tell Your Vision kicks things off in a surprisingly industrial style, it almost sounds something like Soundgarden or even Velvet Revolver, one thing that is welcome and noticeable is the great twin guitar attack, left intact. This is one of the best here. Drama Queen sounds completely different again, it a decent song though. You’ll Hear From Me starts to settle the style of the album in, and is one of the better songs, nice stomping beat. Whatever Happened changes again, it actually sounds like Everclear! Is hard to listen to the album, trying to get hold of the sound. This song is good though. Then all of a sudden thing seem to go back to the Night Ranger that we all know, There Is Life is an obvious stab at a modern day Sister Christian, and its hard not to like it by the end. It seemed like we were getting somewhere, that was before the horrible Rockstar comes strolling in. I have a theory that anyone writing a song called Rockstar seems to stuff it up, and there is plenty of them too, this is another bad one. The title track is thankfully a lot better, and is what these guys do best, it isn’t anything sensational, but its enjoyable. Fool In Me is a nice soft tune, just a song to listen to kicking back, well done. Finally we get to some more rocking with White Knuckle Ride, not bad, could’ve been better. Revelation 4am is like Fool In Me, and these guys are getting really good at this style, another nice one. Wrap It Up boots into old rockin’ territory!, pity its so late in the album, too late to save them. It finishes off with the beautiful Being
CONCLUSION
I didn’t know what to expect from this album, and truth be told I was pretty disappointed. Fans will be happy to get their hands on some new material, but this is not what they’ve been waiting for, for the last 9 years. It lacks all the hooks and melodies that got Night Ranger where they are and fails to deliver. It tries to be to many things at once. They try to update their sound and try to rewrite the past all in one. Great production, but it’s wasted. Boring.
