OVERVIEW
This band has changed immensely since their breakthrough album Infest. The remnants of an edgy rap/rock band are nearly all but gone. There are still older sounding moments on this disc, but they have done the opposite of what all the other sell out bands have done: They’ve gone backwards in style. There are more metal and rocks licks than any Nickleback album (which they are sounding very similar to now), but with still a modern touch. The music is hard to describe. Its hard and its rock. Sometime they re-visit there past style, then other times they lend a little from emo acts like AFI. Overall though, this is actually a great rock album
SONGS
Its sounds like they’re back to their older style with the average To Be Loved, which is very Nickleback in style. This was the lead off single, but certainly not one of the strongest. The chorus is good though. Pounding riffs and screaming usher in Alive, which is as heavy as they’ve ever been, and continues with another Nickleback styled chorus. Electro beats summons in Crash, with its sleazy verses and European style chorus, this is a great industrial number. The World Around Us is another great radio-styled track. Forever starts out like a typical mellow track. But it slowly unveils itself to be an emotional masterpiece, with a sensational chorus. The emo style starts to creep in here, but manages to stay in firm rock territory. It even includes some well-textured Spanish claps! Devise My Own Demise starts off like a thrashy garage number, but soon turns into another melodic masterpiece. Well-done guys. Time Is Running Out is a bit of a departure for these guys, and its well welcome! The sing-a-long intro sets the scene, and it’s all great from there. What Do You Do? Is a better than average modern power ballad. My Heart Is A Fist is another foray into emotional epics. Loved the start of No More Secrets, with its melodic lead work, good solid song. Roses On My Graves try’s hard, with full orchestration, but falls just a little short, but still inspiring.
CONCLUSION
I was fairly surprised by this album. I expected a pack of radio ready pop/rock boredom. While any of these could be released as singles, the emotion and honesty portrayed here is far from their past. Older fans may be missing a little of their old steam, but overall this should excite everyone. I have no doubt that it might miss the mark a little and not get the attention it deserves. It can get monotonous and tiring to listen to. But overall this is a great listen for new and old rock fans alike.
