OVERVIEW

RAIN was founded in 1997 as a result of a project started by Lars Forseth and Sonny Crow from the band Bankok Babes. They were soon joined by the Bangkok Babes drummer Per-Helge “Peppa” Bruvoll, and guitarist Tore Moren from Jorn, Arcturus and Carnivora among others.. In the biggest live venue in Rhodes city, the Colorado Club, they saw and heard Michael Bormann (Jaded Heart, J.R. Blackmore, Zeno, etc.) perform some numbers that caught their mediate attention. The chemistry between Michael and the other guys was a sure thing from the first minute. After a few line up changes, they have produced their second album.

SONGS

Things start off in blazing fashion with the anthemic rocker Do You Like It? You’ll be singing along to this one by the time the second chorus comes around. A little symphony in the background and a Def Leppard styled solo make this a standout track. Insobriety pales in comparison, and although thugs out some nice riffs, it lacks a little in the lyric department. There are great bits though; the ending is especially great with the background harmonies. It starts to sound like Evanescence when Get Over It begins, but soon turns into a great modern hard-rock number. Nice acoustics usher in Crazy, which turns out to be the best track on the album. Thoughtful lyrics and a great chorus (very reminiscent of Laine-era Danger Danger). The piano-esk I’d Die For You is a great Bon Jovi/Bryan Adams styled ballad (Jovi even had a song with this title!) Unfortunately Flesh & Blood is a decent number that is let down by a terrible chorus. They get down and dirty with the sleazy L.A Guns styled Let Me Be Your Favourite, which they manage to pull off in great fashion with another hook-laden chorus and some gritty riffs. The Otherside is another decent ballad, it is especially musically brilliant, with great string work (both orchestral and guitar). A nice reflective riff brings in Deserve; it comes together with an average but passionate chorus, nice melodic lead work throughout though. The stripped-back Right By Your Side fairs much better in the ballad department. Things finish off with yet another Bon Jovi styled ballad Lovesong.

CONCLUSION

This is a very solid album. It lacks a few standouts and hooks to be killer, but it is great. The first half is particularly rocking, dishing out plenty of memorable chorus' and riffs, complete with guitar solos. The second half, although still solid, suffers due to swamp of ballads that just slow it down too much. At times it’s over-produced, but most of it is right on the nail. If you liked Bon Jovi when he was rocking or Danger Danger when they had Paul Laine, then chances are you’ll love this album. An underrated band and not a bad song on their album.
