OVERVIEW
Joe Satriani has carved out a constant groove for himself. He continues to record the instrumental music he has always created, and manages to stay on a major label in these less-than-friendly rock times. He’s come a long say since his breakthrough hit Surfing With The Alien, but still keeps the same passion, 20 years later.
SONGS
The album starts out with what you could almost call a guitar anthem? With crowd clapping and catchy riffs, it’s got all the ingredients of a great Satch number. Just Like Lightnin’ is even better, and turns out to be a highlight of the album. With an infectious funky groove, which makes way for a beautifully melodic section. Great stuff. Joe put it into chill mode on It's So Good, makes you feel like your cruisin’ the beach on a summer’s day, covey’s emotion only the way Satriani can. Redshift Riders is fairly standard Satch affair, but goes down nicely. Ten Words is much finer, very strong track, classic Satriani ballad; he really shines in this setting. He continues the melodic bliss with A Cool New Way more greatness. The positive The Meaning Of Love is like-wise infectious. Only Satriani can pull so much emotion from an instrumental album. Made Of Tears is more brilliance; it’s at this point I’m wondering if the man can do any wrong? He dabbles in a little neo-classical fret play on Theme From A Strange World. Movin’ On and Love Eternal a both brilliant ballad like compositions, Love is especially beautiful. He finishes off with the sensational stomper Crowd Chant.
CONCLUSION
This is probably the best instrumental album I’ve heard since Surfing With The Alien. Not a single sign of filler to be seen. It has all of the sensational slow ballads and finishes up with one of his best tracks that is just begging for a live setting. It’s not for everyone, but fans should be proud of his latest effort. An instrumental classic.
