OVERVIEW

I had been awaiting the arrival of this C.D for sometime. I always loved the old Shark Island, and the chance of something new from these guys seemed impossible. The band had reached almost mythological status after never getting what they deserved from the 80's, which has gained them a large cult following. Unfortunately it wasn't what I expected. On the upside, there's obviously been a lot of time and money spent on this album. The sound is absolutely crisp and the packaging is also great.

SONGS

I was a little shocked to hear the opener Blue Skies was a mid tempo acoustic number. There's nothing wrong with a good song like this. However with past hits like My City, Father Time and Paris Calling, I expected Shark Island to come out blazing with their first song in over 20 years. The songs are actually a mix of old demos and new tracks. Hardcore fans will already know a lot of the songs here, but will see that they've all been recorded and most given a big facelift. Old fans will love rockers like Go West and Heaven, which sound as if nothing has changed. The rest of the album tells otherwise though. They have showed immense maturity in their song writing and truth be told their isn't a bad one in the bunch. But most are acoustic tinged mid paced rockers with some beautiful ballads thrown into the mix, such as the superb I Had A Dream.

CONCLUSION

If you're new to Shark Island, this album will probably sound great, because it is. If you're an old time fan, chances are you'll probably be disappointed. The raw power and melodic heaviness that was so prominent on their early work is nearly all but gone. That said, the album sounds a million bucks. Great production and top notch playing gives these guys much due respect. Check it out for yourself, this one should be an album that slowly grows on you. Heres to hoping it doesn't take another twenty years for them to release another.
