OVERVIEW
In a scene that was already flooded with similar minded bands, the Skids managed to make a big impact with their mix of heavy riffs and pop hooks on their debut. With his pin up looks and wailing vocals the guys had made an investment in a young Sebastian Bach that had obviously paid off. They made several sound changes after each subsequent album and Skid Row is the only one you'll find with this many hooks and anthems, so 80's pop/rock fans should dig in.
SONGS
Big Guns pretty much typifies the whole sound of the album. Shout along chorus, heavy riffing, and of coarse Seb's trademark pipes. This album just flies through the rockers. They stir things up with Heartache and toughen up with the great Piece Of Me. 18 and Life slowly fades in and proves to be one of their best racks ever. Great sound, great lyrics and a great single. They launch into Rattlesnake Shake, which interestingly is the same name of a Motley Crue song released around the same time. Then BAM Youth Gone Wild smashes through your stereo and you now know why these guys were so loved. 80's Pop/metal doesn't get much better than this. They plough through more great rockers with Here I Am and Making A Mess, before slowing down for one of the best power ballads of the era; I Remember You. This is where Seb really lets loose. The album closes up with the underrated Midnight/Tornado.
CONCLUSION
This album could probably typify the late 80's rock scene. It has great production and tight performances with a great front man and catchy songs. There is still some filler to be had on this album, and the band were never happy with the way it portrays them. But if you want a nice slice of 80's rock you really cant go past this. A few more great songs and it would have been a real classic. As it stands it's just a great rock album, so check it out.
