OVERVIEW
I was never really a big fan of Winger. Though I always had full respect for Reb, Kip just…well, he’s Kip. They still had plenty of good songs though, and Pull was a very respectable effort. Either way, I don’t think anyone really guessed a new album would come up at this time, and an album of this calibre. Thankfully we’re out of the slew of terrible records that 80’s bands made during the late 90’s and early this century, because this is another quality release in a growing quality market.
SONGS
The immediate feeling is this is a little darker, and it is. The first song picks straight up where Pull left off. By the time the chorus comes around, there’s no doubt that Winger have kept their sound and quality intact. If anything, Kip has gained a little. Blue Suede Shoes is a great ballad type rocker, very catchy. It's probably the highlight of the album. Four Leaf Clover sounds very, well…Winger. These guys sound like they really are back, especially with this awesome production. M16 is a very political rocker, as are a lot of the songs on this album. Your Great Escape is a great driving, 80’s style rocker. Disappear is more decent Winger rock. They launch into another top notch ballad with On A Day Like Today, which at times sounds like Whitesnake, which is fitting, because Reb has been playing for them. Living Just To Die is much the same as the rest of the albums rockers. A decent rock song ala Winger, but just doesn’t grab you. Short Flight To Mexico is better. While Generica tries to be outspoken, it just drags on. Everything closes up pretty successfully with the great rocker Can’t Take It Back, with more political outcry.
CONCLUSION
I have no doubt that Winger fans will be happy with this release. All these years later and they’re still more than capable of dishing out the rock that made them starts. The sound production and playing are exceptional. However, it rarely delivers the hooks that are needed so badly. The subject matter and politics is well welcome, and gives you a little more to think about than a 17-year-old girl. Impressive stuff by Winger, a few more hooks and this would’ve been killer. Nice artwork by the way. This one growns on you.
