OVERVIEW

After slowly moving from the 70’s styled blues-rock that he helped create on his first few albums, Coverdale makes the full transition into 80’s pop/metal. Many fans were disappointed, but he hit paydirt and won millions of American fans instead. It’s a pity the original band was fired after the recording of the album. Particularly Sykes, who co-wrote nearly every song.

SONGS

The brutal intro to Still Of The Night may give you false predictions for the album. This heavy Led Zepplin-ish update is an epic rocker which changes key half way through, to make an atmospheric middle section. Even better is nasty hard-rocker Bad Boys. It has all the attitude and guitar chops of a classic 80’s staple. Underrated. The greatness continues with Crying In The Rain, the dramatic sounds and chorus of this slow rocker make it another album highlight. The anthemic Give Me All Your Love sounds disappointing here after hearing it as a massive sing-a-long live staple. It still provides the great uplifting attitude and musical flavour, but perhaps a little synth heavy. The first ballad to rear its head is Looking For Love, and is very reminiscent of his earlier ballads. This is what Coverdale is known for and does best. Don’t Turn Away is one of the weaker tracks here. Enormous power ballad Is This Love slowly creeps in, everyone knows this one. Straight For The Heart is an uplifting rocker that speeds along; though it sounds a little dated these days. Your Gonna Break My Heart Again is another great love themed raucous rocker. The next huge hit Here I Go is ushered in by some cheesy synths, however it soon turns into a classic up-tempo rock fest. The album closes out heavy and hard with the rock anthem Children Of The Night.

CONCLUSION

Though it’s not everyone’s favourite Coverdale attempt, it is without doubt a classic. No filler whatsoever, and chock full of numbers that still headline Whitesnake concerts to this day. It can sound very dated at times, especially on singles like Is This Love or Here I Go. But the real highlights are hidden gems like Bad Boys or Crying In The Rain. Whitesnake’s opus, and a must for 80’s rock fans.
