OVERVIEW
Uli Jon Roth’s younger brother Zeno never got the huge reputation like his brother, but musicians in the know have always known what his brother was holding. Eight years since his last release, Zeno proves his skills and musicianship once again. Amazingly recoding most of the album entirely alone, he recruited the vocals of Jaded Heart frontman Michael Bormann. They came up with Runway To The Gods.
SONGS
The first things you notice when spinning this album is the guitar. It’s been a while between great guitar rock albums in this world, which makes this more than welcome. The neo-classical onslaught is let up for a moment for Michael’s vocals is Fanfares Of Love, which is a great European-styled hard rocker. The dramatic Climb The Sky is a great ballad/rocker. Land Of Illusion is similar, only better, with some great pop/rock hooks, and soaring lead licks. The acoustic introduction spice of Shades Of Blue is well welcome, and turns into another great one. Another acoustic intro ushers in the title track, and turns into an album highlight. Instrumental Sogno Di Angelo is well welcomed, and helps break up the album a little. Refugees is another album highlight, great singing and playing. Heavy riffs comes pouring out of I Feel – I Live, starting to sound more like American rock here, and it’s great! Purify is huge, the middle section isn’t great, but the rest is. Zeno lends his own vocals to Do You Feel The Time, and although it doesn’t come close to Bormann, it isn’t too bad, sort of. It finishes off with another sweet instrumental.
CONCLUSION
While far from perfect, Zeno has managed to combine tastes from American and European hard rock to find a great balance. All the songs here are of epic proportions and there is nothing terrible among every track. However, there aren’t too many tracks that really stand out as sensational, although there are some nice highlights. Good solid effort for Zeno, hopefully it won’t be another 8 years for him to improve on it.
