OVERVIEW
Poison’s classic and breakthrough album can sound a little dated today. The singles still hold up, but the rest can be hard to stomach at times. Dated production aside, the boys show massive maturity on their sophomore effort. Not their strongest album, but definitely the one they’ll be remembered for.
SONGS
C.C DeVille’s riff cuts through the crispy clean silence on Love On The Rocks. It starts out great but tends to drag on. But no need to worry as Nothin’ But A Good Time will launch anyone out of his or her depression. Its cheesy, but its fun. And you can’t help but get on board with Bret. Back to the Rocking Horse, a throwaway track, is actually a hidden gem. They get down to a little boogie with Good Love, but rock hard again with the riff driven rockers Tearin’ Down The Walls and the good Look But You Can’t Touch. But that is pushed aside as the brilliant Fallen Angels throws in the first of the albums double punch. Their best song Every Rose Has Its Thorn follows, and set the standard for all those who followed. A cover of Mama Don’t Dance bops along and the album comes to an explosive end with the cool Bad To Be Good.
CONCLUSION
This album packs a bunch of their best songs, but still manages to include some filler. Every Rose alone, makes it a necessity album for any fan of the genre. The production is a hollow and basic 80’s affair from Tom Werman, who did the same with Motley Crue’s Girls, Girls, Girls. Its can be very cheesy at times. But if you can waver that and get into the spirit with Bret and the boys, you’re sure to have Nothin’ But A Good Time.
